Salary: £28,000 - £43,685 plus Community Homes Allowance of £6,289 and Secure Unit Allowance of £2,583 per annum

At Adel Beck we care for 24 young people aged 10 to 18. They are referred to us following court proceedings, placed on remand or sentenced to a period of detention, or because they need to be placed in secure accommodation for their own safety or the safety of others. You will lead a team of care practitioners who have a vital role in the daily lives and long-term outlook for the vulnerable young people at Adel Beck, who may have complex needs and display challenging behaviours.

The role

As a teacher at Adel Beck you will be expected to take responsibility for the provision of all Teaching and Learning and learning activities within your subject area/s; including curriculum development. You will be required to ensure high quality teaching and learning standards are met in line with, Education Standards, Children’s Homes Regulations, Children’s Homes National Minimum Standards, Youth Justice Standards and requirements.

We expect the following experience and qualifications:

  • qualified teacher status
  • ability to plan and deliver high quality lessons that meet the individual needs of all our students
  • ability to provide high quality assessment and feedback that promotes student progress
  • understanding of child and adolescent development
  • understanding of restorative and trauma-informed practice
  • knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and child protection and safeguarding principles
  • experience of teaching in a residential childcare/education environment or of teaching in a SEND/SEMH provision
  • experience of supporting children or young people with complex and challenging behaviour to engage with education activities

Job purpose

To take responsibility for the provision of all Teaching and Learning of your subject area/s within the Home’s Education facility, including curriculum development and ensuring a high quality of teaching and learning that meets with, Education Standards, Children’s Homes Regulations, Children’s Homes National Minimum Standards, Youth Justice Standards and requirements.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support the Home’s main purpose of encouraging and enabling children and young people to develop attitudinally, behaviourally, educationally, and emotionally in order that they may deliver positive contributions to their families, society and their local communities whilst reducing offending, resulting in the decrease in victims of youth crime. All young people are admitted because of offending behaviour or having other complex behavioural needs.
  • Always create and maintain a customer focused attitude and approach that promotes positive relationships and generates a culture of openness and trust.
  • To deliver efficient, effective, and quality services by way of flexible working.
  • To work together with colleagues from all other service areas within the home to provide and maintain a safe and secure living and learning environment that promotes the safety and welfare of children and young people in which they can prosper, develop, and achieve.
  • To foster, maintain and support pro-social behaviour, a restorative practice and solution focussed approach with children, young people, and colleagues.
  • To input and retrieve information using the computer and IT systems available.

  • Manage classes effectively using approaches which are appropriate to pupils’ needs to involve and motivate them.
  • Maintain good relationships with pupils, exercise appropriate authority and act decisively when necessary.
  • Undertake safety and security checks of teaching areas, fixtures, fittings, furniture and equipment as detailed in the Personal Search and Classroom Monitoring procedure.
  • Be familiar with risk assessments relating to both individual pupils and activities.

Qualifications

Qualified Teacher Status is essential.

Essential requirements

  • Ability to teach.
  • IT skills particularly in MS Office Word, Excel and database programmes, email and the Internet
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including face-to-face, telephone and written communication skills.
  • Able to listen actively, ask questions, clarify points and check understanding.
  • Able to deal positively and objectively with challenging pupils.
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team.

  • Able to develop and maintain manual and computerised administrative systems and databases.
  • Effective facilitator of teaching pupils with a wide spectrum learning styles and educational needs
  • Able to manage self and work under pressure.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with challenging and demanding pupils.
  • Knowledge of the Ofsted Framework for Education (EIF) and the education section of the Social Care Common Assessment Framework (SCCIF)
  • Knowledge and experience of teaching PE and Humanities (specifically geography or history)
  • 5 GCSE Grade C or equivalent inc. English and mathematics
  • Qualified teacher status
  • Experience of teaching and supervising pupils in formal and informal contexts on a one to one and group basis
  • Experience of working in a team and on own initiative
  • Experience of working with pupils in conflict and in crisis situations
  • Experience of working with external agencies in relation to pupil support
  • Experience of maintaining electronic records
