Leeds Lights consist of a small team fabricating, manufacturing and delivering the cities festive display annually. The team also deliver the banner scheme throughout the city.

The Leeds Lights team spend the summer months creating, designing and producing a variety of festive motifs, repairing and safety testing.

Throughout the winter the work is conducted in unsociable hours to install over 3K lamp column motifs using various lifting equipment. The team are also equipped to install the electrical equipment within the street furniture and carry out safety testing.

Leeds City Council are looking to appoint a Welder - fabricator to assist with the overall delivery of the city’s annual festive lighting displays and banner scheme.

Working with the Operations Supervisor within Leeds Lights and the Arts, Events & Venues service and based at the workshop in Seacroft, we are looking for an experienced skilled welder - fabricator with experience in MIG Aluminium welding holding minimum of a level 3 or equivalent. You must also have experience in the use of mobile elevated working platforms (MEWP’s) you must have a detailed understanding of safe street work and mechanical engineering.

With a can-do attitude and excellent logistical and organisation skills, the successful candidate will be required to play a role in motivating the workshop and site operations teams in the manufacture, installation, recovery, maintenance and storage of the city centre and outer ward area festive lighting displays and the coordination of the city dressing banner programme.

It is a requirement that the post holder be willing to the work their normal 37 hours over a 7-day week which will at times involve unsociable hours and weekend work and working in an outdoor environment.

Job Description

Job Purpose

To manufacture, fabricate, maintain and repair festive light motifs and to support the installation, recovery and storage operations of the festive light displays and general maintenance associated with the workshop/warehouse buildings

Responsibilities for Grade

  • To carry out essential welding, fabrication, production, maintenance, repair and refurbishment works for all new and existing aluminium and steel frame motifs within the Leeds Lights workshop at the Highways Seacroft depot. 
  • To ensure all risk assessments, method statements and safe working practices including PPE for welding, fabricating and all associated operational tasks are adhered to and regularly reviewed. 
  • To ensure all new and refurbished motifs are stored correctly and to assist with the general storage, upkeep and stock rotation of the warehouse. 
  • To safely maintain and store tools and equipment and to ensure all working areas are kept clean and tidy. 
  • To ensure a stock inventory of all fabricating and operational materials is kept up to date and all purchases are within agreed budgets.
  • To work with the Leeds Lights Manger on the design and layout of new motif and frame designs. 
  • To assist with the coordination, installation and recovery of the city centre and outer ward area festive light displays, Christmas tree lighting, ancillary displays and internal decoration schemes as required. 
  • To ensure due regard for the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work at all times, promoting safe working practices for all staff, contractors, visitors and public.
  • To carry out any other duties as requested by senior management which are commensurate with the grade of the post.

Qualifications NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Advanced Welding Skills 

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.

  • Ability to weld and fabricate aluminium and steel frames.

  • Knowledge and understanding of current welding practices and regulations.

  • Knowledge and understanding of electricity at Work Act and current industry lighting and electrical systems and regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience of using various IT packages including Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Experience of MIG (metal inert gas), TIG (tungsten inert gas) MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding methods.
  • Experience of welding with Oxy-Acetylene gas equipment.
  • Experience of metal cutting using Plasma and Oxy-Acetylene equipment.
  • Experience of fabrication works from raw or semi-finished materials.
  • Experience of working with plant machinery, hand tools and equipment.
  • Experience of working in a workshop environment.
  • Demonstrates an enthusiasm and commitment to working in the welding, fabrication and lighting industries.
  • Willingness to work outdoors.
  • Willingness to work unsociable hours and be on call during certain times of the year.
