This post offers an exciting opportunity to join and lead the teaching team within our Informal Teaching and Learning Group. The Informal Pathway provides a fully personalised curriculum driven by EHCP outcomes, designed to strengthen learner engagement with a particular emphasis on developing communication and independence. Learning is enriched through play, exploration and multi‑sensory experiences, with adults using responsive, reactive and engaging approaches such as Intensive Interaction.

As part of this role, 2.5 days per week will be dedicated to Middle Leadership responsibilities within the Informal Teaching and Learning Group. The successful candidate will lead, manage and inspire a team of teachers delivering the Informal curriculum, ensuring consistently high standards of teaching and learning and contributing to the ongoing development of outstanding inclusive practice.

We are seeking a Middle Leader who is a strong and positive role model for both staff and pupils. You will offer supportive challenge, foster reflective practice, and work collaboratively with colleagues to continually refine and enhance teaching approaches so that all learners within the Informal Teaching and Learning Group maximise their engagement, progress and overall achievement.

Our young people (2-19) have a wide range of special educational needs, including Autistic Spectrum Condition.

We offer an inclusive setting operating on the main Broomfield site and three partnership sites:

  • Windmill Primary School
  • Rodillian Academy
  • Future Steps Hub (White Rose Business Park)

This enables us to meet a wide variety of pupils’ needs and provide support and advice to the community.

Staff can be expected to work on any of the four sites if required.

The successful candidates will have;

  • The ability to lead and manage staff teams effectively to ensure excellent outcomes for young people
  • Experience of effective curriculum planning to ensure inspirational teaching, learning, assessment and behaviour management strategies to ensure learning is engaging and inclusive.
  • Knowledge and understanding of working with pupils with ASC, ADHD, communication and Interaction needs and Moderate Learning Difficulties
  • Experience and skills of teaching pupils with a broad range of Special Educational Needs to secure excellent outcomes
  • The ability to effectively quality assure provision and provide reports and action plans to further develop identified areas
  • Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders

Key Responsibilities

To teach as directed on the timetable, as outlined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2014 and Guidance on School Teachers Pay and Conditions. It is the responsibility of the post holder to familiarise themselves with this document, and carry out the general functions as specified.

Working in the South SILC – Broomfield School, the Governing Body expects every teacher to:

  • Support the ethos of the school and ensure that its main aims, of meeting pupils’ needs and raising their achievements, are met.
  • Have experience and knowledge of working with pupils and young people with a range of special educational needs.
  • Be aware of the needs of all pupils as they come within the teacher’s responsibility and to ensure that teacher expectations match pupils’ potential.
  • Have personal (or support others in) responsibility for a pastoral group.
  • Teach, as required by the timetable, throughout the age and ability range.
  • Evaluate personal teaching critically through self-review and reflection to improve personal effectiveness
  • Prepare and make available units of work/MTPs in the relevant subject areas consistent with school policy.
  • Plan and prepare daily lessons appropriate to agreed units of work and consistent with school policy.
  • Apply appropriate strategies which keep pupils challenged, stimulated and engaged.
  • Set appropriate and demanding expectations for pupils’ learning and motivation and set clear targets for learning building on prior attainment.
  • Write and review Personal Targets which identify SMART targets and adhere to school policy.
  • Understand the purpose of Planning Preparation and Assessment time, and use it constructively as outlined in the Teachers Pay and Conditions Document.
  • Assess, level, moderate and record individual pupil progress in accordance with the school’s policy.
  • Monitor and record pupil attainment, contribute to the identification of ‘next targets’ and track their progress using National Curriculum criteria, B-Squared or other assessment schemes adopted by the school.
  • Plan for, and direct the work of learning support staff and other adults assisting in the classroom.
  • Ensure that adequate information is available and suitable for supply and school-based teaching cover in the event of absences due to sickness or any other cause
  • Set high expectations for pupils’ behavior and deploy appropriate strategies in order to ensure effective behaviour and classroom management
  • Take responsibility for personal Continual Professional Development (CPD) and to keep up to date with research and developments in pedagogy and in the subjects taught.
  • Lead or co- lead on a subject area throughout school (except for NQT’s)
  • Support subject development opportunities across school in line with para. 75.6 (p129) and 75.11.4 (p130) of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and the additional guidance paper.
  • Prepare and write Reviews of Statements/EHCs for pupils for whom they are responsible.
  • Prepare, and write annual Reports to Parents and other agencies.
  • Attend other meetings which are reasonably within directed time
  • Be a member of a department/key phase and work collaboratively in pursuit of the objectives of that department.
  • Liaise as appropriate with other agencies including medical and social services, S&LT, Physiotherapy, regarding issues relating to pupils’ welfare.
  • Contribute to outreach support in mainstream schools as necessary.
  • Implement and follow school Child Protection / Safeguarding Policies and procedures and promote Equality and Health & Safety.
  • To be responsible for safeguarding all pupils and promoting their welfare by adhering to all child protection procedures.
  • Be aware of and operate within the policies of the school.

Job Title: Teaching and Learning Group Middle Leader

Grade: MPS / UPS + SEN 1/2 + TLR

Accountable for: Teaching and Learning Group – informal

Main Purpose of the Role:

The TLG Middle Leader will take lead responsibility for providing leadership and management for the formal curriculum area to:

  • Promote and develop best inclusive practice for students in the TLG
  • Support the vision, ethos and policies of the SILC to maximise achievement and progress of learners within the TLG
  • Play a key part in raising standards for Teaching and Learning by acting as a role model for others and demonstrating that they are an effective professional who challenges and supports colleagues to maximise their teaching and learning performance

Main Duties in addition to the generic Broomfield SILC teacher’s job description – see enclosed:

Ensure you lead and develop your TLG team to deliver high quality teaching and learning; quality assuring provision effectively to ensure the following are facilitated for all pupils 2-19:

Strategic Direction:

  • Contributing to the creation and implementation of the School Development Plan and Whole School policies and taking responsibility for appropriately delegating aspects of it
  • Analysing and interpreting relevant national, local and school data, as well as research and inspection evidence, to inform policies, practices, expectations, targets and teaching methods
  • Establishing a clear, shared understanding that teaching within the TLG will contribute to students’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development, and will prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
  • With the involvement of relevant staff, establish short, medium and long-term plans for the development and resourcing of the TLG.

Teaching and Learning

  • Securing effective learning to maximise achievement and progress and increasing independence for all our students
  • Ensuring teaching demonstrates breadth, balance, creativity and opportunities for progression
  • Supporting colleagues in using assessment to effectively plan lessons to meet the needs of all students
  • Providing guidance on the choice of appropriate teaching and learning methods to meet the needs of the all students
  • Quality Assure all aspects of Teaching and Learning within the TLG, including pupil progress, and use this analysis to identify effective practice and areas for improvement, and take action to improve further the quality of teaching
  • Plan robust and effective transition plans for all students on entry and exit at all Key Stages and in year transfers

Leading and Managing Staff

  • Developing positive working relationships with and between all students and staff in the school
  • Playing a key role in developing a culture of professional learning, mutual respect and trust
  • Establishing clear expectations and constructive working relationships among all staff, including through team working and mutual support; devolving responsibilities and delegating tasks, as appropriate
  • Appraise staff as required by the school policy and use the process to develop the personal and professional effectiveness of the appraisee(s)
  • Audit the training needs of TLG staff and develop robust action plans to address CPD needs
  • Lead professional development for through example and support, and co-ordinate the provision of high-quality professional development by methods such as coaching, drawing on other sources of expertise as necessary
  • Make sure that trainee and newly qualified teachers are appropriately trained, monitored, supported and assessed
  • Provide opportunities for collaborative working, including team teaching, peer observation and coaching
  • Enable teachers to achieve expertise in their teaching areas
  • Make sure that the Head Teacher, senior leaders and governors are well informed about TLG policies, plans and priorities, the success in meeting objectives and targets, and TLG-related professional development plans

Efficient and Effective Deployment of Staff and Resources

  • Establish staff and resource needs for the subject and advise the Head Teacher and senior leaders of likely priorities for expenditure, and allocate available resources with maximum efficiency to meet the objectives of the school and subject plans and to achieve value for money
  • Deploy, or advise the Head Teacher on the deployment of staff involved in the subject to make sure the best use of subject, technical and other expertise
  • Make sure the effective and efficient management and organisation of learning resources, including ICT
  • Maintain existing resources and explore opportunities to develop or incorporate new resources from a wide range of sources inside and outside the school
  • Use space to create an effective and stimulating environment for the teaching and learning of the subject
  • Make sure that there is a safe working and learning environment in which risks are properly assessed
  • To be responsible for safeguarding all pupils and promoting their welfare by adhering to all child protection procedures.
  • Provide support and expertise for mainstream settings as required
