The Workshop and Engineering section is looking to recruit a Senior Mobile Workshop Technician to join our Transport & Engineering team and help secure the long-term success of the section.

As a Senior Workshop Technician, you’ll thrive as part of a leadership team, guiding a group of highly skilled workshop technicians, fitters, and trainee technicians. The successful applicant will play a key role in maintaining the Green Spaces fleet, ensuring the council’s statutory duties are upheld and that we continue to provide safe, well-maintained spaces for everyone to enjoy.

About you

Qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Land-Based Service Engineering or equivalent experience.

Skills:

  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex machinery systems.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to work under pressure.

Experience:

  • Maintenance of horticultural, agricultural, and arboriculture machinery.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Budget management and compliance knowledge.

Other:

  • Full clean driving licence (minimum B1).
  • Commitment to health and safety and equal opportunities.

Desirable:

  • Leadership experience.
  • Full HGV licence.
  • Training in heavy lifting equipment.
  • Proven training record in the use of forklift trucks.

About the role

  • Carry out remote maintenance, servicing, and repairs on specialist machinery and plant.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, including welding and fabrication.
  • Monitor and inspect work completed by in-house teams and contractors to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor apprentices and trainees, supporting their development.
  • Ensure all maintenance meets statutory regulations and Council policy.
  • Maintain accurate records of servicing, repairs, and compliance checks.
  • Liaise with external dealers and suppliers for parts and repairs.
  • Promote health and safety best practices and compile risk assessments.

You will be expected to provide your own basic hand tools for day-to-day tasks. All specialist tools and equipment required for complex repairs and diagnostics will be provided by Leeds City Council.

A full, clean driving licence is essential to allow the post holder to access remote sites and some lone working will be required.  You must be willing to work evenings or weekends as over time where required.

Job Description

Job purpose: To remotely maintain, service and repair of the Council’s Agricultural, Horticultural and Arboriculture machinery fleet in accordance with statutory regulations and Council Policy. To undertake monitoring and compliance inspections of works undertaken in-house and by 3rd party contractors

Responsibilities for Grade:

To undertake monitoring and compliance inspections of works undertaken in-house and by 3rd party contractors at a level required to ensure that work outputs meet quality and contractual requirements.

To lead on the mentoring of apprentices and trainees within the team to ensure that learning opportunities are maximised, and that apprentices and trainees are given opportunities to develop and succeed.

To control the maintenance and repair of the machinery fleet by direct labour, as well as evaluating where necessary the use of contractors ensuring the delivery of a high quality and efficient workshop.

To ensure that maintenance is carried out in accordance with an agreed programme. Ensuring plant & trailers are maintained in a roadworthy condition and in compliance with Vehicle Operator Licencing. 

To compile risk assessments and to ensure that all work undertaken is in line with the Health & Safety at Work act and the authorities health & safety policy.

To ensure that all necessary records and systems related to maintenance, repair, servicing and testing are properly maintained and kept up to date.

To accurately diagnose faults and carry out specialist repairs to hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems, including minor body, welding and fabrication work on the machinery fleet.  Efficiently carrying out work in accordance with the specified repair policy and manufacturers recommendations

To correct use and care for specialist tools provided for repair and maintenance purposes.

Liaison with external dealers, main agents and repair facilities on all matters relating to repairs.

Completion of all current and future job-related documentation required for management and payment of contractor and supplier recharges.

Responsible for the service vehicle, security, safety and maintenance of work areas in accordance with the Council’s financial regulations, policies and procedures

To advise the Workshop and Engineering Manager, through the appropriate mechanisms, of any ideas that might improve the efficiency or cost effectiveness of the operation of the workshop

Attendance at any relevant computer, product or other training courses as directed to ensure capability to inspect, repair, fault diagnose and service the council’s fleet of machinery and to ensure the ability to use computer systems as required by the maintenance operation.

To review working methods and practices in order to improve the efficiency and quality of the service. 

Safe and correct use of and disposal of hazardous and toxic substances such as oils, fuels, cleaning agents etc

Be adaptable to work on different types of specialist machinery, plant and equipment and carry out fabrication and welding as required. To keep abreast and adapt to changes in technology, legislation, standards and regulations

Carry out work to machinery and plant in inclement weather conditions and where necessary assist with recovery of the machine from operational sites.

Identify, liaise and requisition spares/parts through the internal stores section and external suppliers.  Collecting non stock items from approved suppliers when required.

To ensure the work space and depot facilities are kept in a clean and tidy condition and that all works undertaken comply with the relevant legislation including the council’s Health and Safety policies, safety requirements and standard procedures

To maintain discipline and actively support, communicate and implement council policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Land Based Service Engineering or considerable work experience in a specialist workshop area

Ability to access remote sites efficiently with minimum B1 clean driving licence

Knowledge of specialist computer software packages and diagnostics

Knowledge of financial procedures for procuring new machines and spare parts

Experience Required

Experience in maintenance of horticultural, agricultural and arboriculture machinery

Considerable years continuous period in either – approved apprenticeship or recognised training scheme externally tested and validated. 

Experience in bodywork repairs including welding and fabrication

Experience in budget management
