About the role

The Leeds Vision Zero 2040 strategy is the bold ambition that no one should die or suffer serious injury on the roads in Leeds. This role will contribute towards delivering this ambitious strategy.

The Travel Behaviour Change team works with a wide variety of educational establishments, businesses, community groups and individuals across the city to deliver the Vision Zero 2040 strategy and to promote sustainable travel choices. Our work with schools includes practical pedestrian and scooter training, alongside classroom lessons and assemblies to encourage safe road user behaviour and active travel. The team also work closely with providers of Bikeability cycle training and external partners including the police and fire service.

Within our wider team, we deliver exciting projects such as School Streets, Leeds Public Bike Hire (LNER Beryl Bikes) and a wide range of safe and sustainable travel campaigns and events.

About the position

In this role you will play a key part in providing safe and sustainable travel education in schools across Leeds. Your role will include the following:

  • Working as part of a small team of trainers to deliver pedestrian and scooter training, classroom lessons and assemblies for mainly primary-aged pupils
  • Support with additional activities in schools, including occasional secondary school activities
  • Assisting at a wider range of safe and sustainable travel events across the city, such as ‘Breeze’, ‘Bike Register’ and speed monitoring initiatives
  • Promoting national sustainable travel campaigns at a Leeds level including Walking Month / Walk to School week (Living Streets), Big Walk and Wheel (Walk Wheel Cycle Trust) ) and Modeshift STARS accreditation
  • Providing road safety training to pupils in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) settings and those that support them in Leeds

This role involves working in schools across the city on most days, with an office base at Merrion House, Leeds and storage facility at Knowsthorpe Gate, Cross Green.  This is a full-time, term-time only position (37 hours per week), with the requirement for occasional evening or weekend working, for which flexi leave can be accrued.

About you

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience of working with children and young people and/or partnership working within a community
  • Enthusiasm to deliver and contribute to practical and classroom-based education programmes to promote safe and sustainable travel and influence travel behaviour choices
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to different audiences
  • 5 GCSE’s grade A*-C (including Maths & English) or equivalent level qualifications relevant to the duties of this post
  • Travel throughout the district is an essential part of this job and you must hold a current driver’s licence.

Job purpose

As a member of the Travel Behaviour Change team, a central part of your role will involve delivering practical pedestrian and scooting training and classroom-based road safety education to children, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed for safe and independent travel. Your role will be to support engagement with schools, road users, businesses and other organisations and communities to promote safe road-user behaviour and more sustainable travel choices.

Vision Zero is a ground-breaking approach to road danger. We believe that no one should die or suffer serious injury when driving, walking, riding or cycling on the roads in Leeds. The role will contribute to the development and delivery of initiatives, campaigns and events in support of the Leeds Vision Zero 2040 strategy and action plan and help reach this ambition.

The role will also contribute to wider service and policy objectives for transport and travel planning.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver playground based and off-site pedestrian road safety training with children within established scheme guidelines at locations throughout the Leeds district.
  • Support the road safety and travel planning teams in the planning and delivery of measures which improve road safety and contribute to more efficient and sustainable patterns of travel.
  • Deliver playground based and off-site scooter training with children within established scheme guidelines at locations throughout the Leeds district.
  • Deliver road safety and sustainable travel educational lessons and assemblies in schools to a variety of age-groups.
  • Assist in the development of interactive, engaging and progressive road safety education and training, including face to face and online programmes.
  • Liaise with school staff in the organisation of in-school activities.
  • Work with local communities to raise awareness of road safety and sustainable travel choices.
  • Motivate and interest the public in safe cycling, walking and sustainable travel choices.
  • Ensure that relevant information and administrative systems (including electronic, document files and graphical systems) are up to date and properly maintained.
  • Work with key partners within and external to the Council to promote Leeds Vision Zero 2040 strategy, encouraging safe and responsible road use and more sustainable travel patterns and behaviours.
  • Assist team members as required in problem solving and providing customer focused information and advice.
  • Undertake the delivery of specified elements of the Service Plan and Team Plan in line with the Council’s corporate strategies in relation to a defined activity or small range of activities, in order to meet targets and achieve improvements.
  • Within the service area take responsibility for maintaining effective communications with staff, service users, councillors, trade unions, partners and other stakeholders in accordance with Council good practice and with regard to implementing e-government objectives.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to change to assist other services as required.
  • Participate in appraisal, training, and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.
  • Improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and appropriate CPD programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.

Qualifications

5 GCSE’s grade A*-C (including Maths & English) or equivalent level qualifications relevant to the duties of this post.
