Design Technology Technician
Salary: B3 (SCP 7-11)
Hours: 37 hours per week Term Time only + 20 days
Location: Woodkirk Academy, Rein Road, Tingley, Wakefield WF3 1JQ

Purpose of role -
The Design Technology Technician is responsible for overseeing the preparation, provision, and ongoing maintenance of technology rooms and resources, under the strategic guidance of the Head of Design Technology. This critical role supports the delivery of the Design Technology curriculum, with a particular focus on food, textiles, and graphics. The postholder will ensure that all aspects of the department’s technical resources are efficiently managed, guaranteeing a safe and conducive working environment for both staff and students
Key Responsibilities -
Leadership in Resource Management
- Proactively manage the preparation and organisation of all resources, materials, and equipment, ensuring they align with the specific needs of the department.
- Take the lead in setting up and clearing away of technology equipment, materials, and resources before and after lessons, ensuring seamless transitions between activities.
- Oversee the preparation and presentation of cooked food/dishes for student collection at the end of the day, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety are maintained.
- Take responsibility for the preparation of textile and food resources for practical sessions, ensuring all materials are in place and ready for use.
- Manage the secure storage of supplies and ensure all materials are safely accounted for, reducing waste and maximising resource availability.
- Maintain oversight of departmental stock levels, initiate orders as required, and keep accurate, up-to-date records through a stock management system.
- Oversee the set-up and management of specialist equipment, ensuring all tools and machinery are used in full compliance with health and safety regulations, and are properly maintained for student use.
- Take the initiative in keeping abreast of technological advancements and innovations, evaluating new equipment and resources to ensure the department remains with teaching and learning indicatives.
Administration and Strategic Oversight
- Take ownership of both manual and computerized departmental records, ensuring all information is processed accurately and efficiently.
- Lead the administration of student records, tracking progress and maintaining data integrity.
- Coordinate the use of the departmental diary system, ensuring all activities are accurately documented and resources are optimally allocated.
- Take responsibility for maintaining and updating key administrative records, such as spreadsheets and databases, ensuring they are organized and accessible.
- Collaborate closely with the Head of Department to create and prepare assessment materials, ensuring they meet curriculum requirements and are aligned with department goals.
- Manage all capitation expenditure, ensuring it is tracked and remains within the allocated resources, while maintaining financial accountability.
Cleaning and Maintenance Oversight
- Ensure that all designated classrooms and workspaces are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and order, promoting a safe and professional environment for both staff and students.
- Take responsibility for reporting and managing any faults or malfunctions in classroom equipment, ensuring minimal disruption to learning.
- Oversee the routine cleaning and maintenance of specialist equipment, ensuring it is kept in optimal condition to meet both safety standards and the practical needs of the curriculum.
Health and Safety Leadership
- Represent the Design Technology Department at Health and Safety meetings, ensuring that all required actions and recommendations are communicated effectively to the Head of Department.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to manage shared equipment usage, facilitating smooth coordination.
- Lead the promotion and enforcement of health and safety standards within the department, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors in line with relevant health and safety legislation.
- Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments for all technician activities, ensuring that all practical sessions adhere to best safety practices.
Teaching Support and Development
- Provide high-level support during practical lessons, collaborating with teaching staff to ensure the smooth running of all technical aspects of the curriculum.
Take on additional teaching support responsibilities, as required, to ensure that all students have access to the necessary resources and equipment for successful learning
General Duties -
- To ensure that relevant Academy procedures and systems are effectively maintained.
- To be aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection.
- To promote and ensure the health and safety of visitors at all times, in accordance with appropriate health and safety legislation.
- To attend and participate in staff meetings and briefings as appropriate.
- To undertake appropriate training and re-training as required for the role.
- To contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the school.
Special Conditions of Service -
- There is a requirement to submit an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check
