Lighthouse Futures Trust is an SPI (Specialist Post-16 Institution) and a registered charity that was established in 2018. 

Our focus is on supporting young adults, aged 16-25, to gain the social and employability skills they need to find and sustain paid employment. 

Our main eligibility criteria are that: they want to progress to paid work. They have an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan); are autistic and/or  have mild to moderate learning difficulties or other support needs.

We have exceedingly high success rates in terms of helping students move into employment or specialist training and, in February 2023, our Ofsted rating was Good, scoring Good in two categories and Outstanding in two categories.

Our principle programmes are:

Pre-internship: this lasts for 10 months and is primarily based on our college site, but includes regular trips and business visits, as well as inviting external business speakers in

Supported internship: this lasts for 10 months and includes 3 days a week on site with a major local employer

Principle Responsibilities

  • Provide 1-1 support to an intern who is based on an employer site in Leeds for approximately 3 days a week, and 1-2 days a week at our college site in Headingley.
  • Work closely with the designated Job Coach to support all aspects of the learner’s journey including working with employers, liaising with parent/carers where appropriate and supporting the young person through each stage of the programme.
  • Support the individual to gain confidence, feel valued and build self-esteem as well as developing work-based skills.
  • Help the intern to develop wider independence skills to ensure they can lead fulfilled lives e.g. travel training, banking and finance, social events and social groups, health and well-being and self-advocacy.
  • Be prepared to undertake training so as to better understand the support needs of the individual, including the potential requirement to administer medication or provide other first aid interventions.
  • Develop positive relationships with work buddies and support them to work successfully with the intern, helping to build confidence in their daily interactions.
  • Working with the Job Coach, ensure the individual has a high chance of employment through liaison with the host employer and other employers to ensure a successful transition into paid employment.
  • Collaborate with SENCO and wider team to set, monitor, review and record progress at all times for the intern and measure against personal, EHCP and work-based targets on LFT based systems as required.
  • Support the Job Coach to complete relevant paperwork to ensure the student placement runs as effectively and efficiently as possible throughout their internship e.g. risk assessments, IPRA, PEEPs, support plans, employer induction/on boarding paperwork.
  • Ensure all interns are safe at all times through appropriate risk assessments and by following safeguarding procedures and policies at all times.
  • Always have very high regard for the interns, seeing their strengths and talents and be ambitious for their futures.
  • Represent Lighthouse Futures Trust professionally at work-related events and meetings when required and promote the programme within your allocated employer site.
  • Represent LFT professionally at events, conferences, exhibitions and meetings to contribute to the ongoing positive reputation of the college.
  • Support the Job Coach to deliver other aspects of the wider Supported Internship programme including: planning/delivery of inspiration days and induction activities;
  • develop resources to be used in workshops on health and wellbeing, employability and other topics; develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with employers, external agencies and other partners.
  • Deliver all the above to the highest standards at all times and have regard to the Supported Internship Quality Assessment Framework (SIQAF) which will be used to measure quality.
  • Any other duties that may be required to help drive forward the vision of Lighthouse Futures Trust and ensure that students remain at the forefront of our work.
