About you

As an Apprentice Green Keeper you will:

  • Have an understanding and enthusiasm for golf.
  • Be able to undertake training and development activities as required by our learning providers and existing staff.
  • Attained a minimum of GCSE Level 4/C in Maths and English.
  • Attend Askham Bryan College, York.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
  • Display an ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.

About the role

Our Golf Team are seeking to appoint an Apprentice Green Keeper, to be part of a team based at Roundhay Golf Course however you will have the opportunity to work at our other prestigious golf course at Temple Newsam.

The successful candidate will be required to attend Askham Bryan College in York and undertake a Level 2 Green Keeping Apprenticeship over 24 months with 22 one-week blocks spread across the academic calendar. There will also be additional internal training and development opportunities to bolster your learning.

What you will learn:-

  • Prepare the golf course for play, in line with the Rules of Golf.
  • Maintain wildlife habitats and environmentally sensitive areas within the golf course.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of golf course drainage and irrigation systems.
  • Health and safety in the workplace.

Leeds City Council Job Profile 

Job Purpose: To participate in the Golf Greenkeeping apprenticeship programme, gaining theoretical and practical experience in support of the Parks and Green Spaces Strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Gain knowledge for preparing golf courses for play using appropriate equipment and machinery.
  • Learn about the maintenance and renovation of all turf surfaces including turf treatments.
  • Gain experience to maintain and renovate course hazards including drainage and irrigation systems.
  • Gain skills and knowledge for establishing turf and plants when maintaining and constructing golf features.
  • Gain knowledge and experience when dealing with members of the public and users in an appropriate manner.
  • Complete training assignments and maintain a student portfolio and carry out a work-based apprenticeship.
  • Be aware of and comply with Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g. child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure equality for all working in an anti-discriminatory manner, upholding and promoting the values, standards and equality & diversity policies of Leeds City Council.
  • Recognise and appropriately challenge any incidents of racism, bullying, harassment or victimisation and any form of abuse of equal opportunities, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • The Council has adopted a flexibility protocol and this role will be expected to work within these parameters.
  • Flexible and adaptable to change to assist other services as required commensurate to grade.

Qualifications

Any individuals who have gained an apprenticeship in greenkeeping or similar, is not eligible to apply. There is a requirement for applicants to have achieved a minimum GCSE grade 4/C or equivalent in Maths and English.

Essential Requirements It is essential that the Candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post within the context of the specific role duties and responsibilities:  Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate on the application form that they meet all the essential requirements.

  • Ability to deal with members of the public in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate a reason for wanting to train as an apprentice in Green Keeping.

  • Experience of working on a golf course or within a golf environment.
