1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant (E7391) - Kirkstall St Stephen's C of E (VA) Primary School

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Learning Support Assistant/ Teaching Assistant in our current Year 1 Class for a child with SEMH needs. 

This is for 6.5 hours daily, from 8.55am – 3.25pm on a 0.8 weekly contract as the child is on a flexi-schooling agreement. 

The role incorporates some lunchtime supervision. 

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, caring and committed professional to join our enthusiastic and supportive team, starting as soon as possible. The successful candidate will work alongside and support the class teacher to ensure that the child is accessing the curriculum and making positive progress with their emotional development and their academic learning.  They will liaise closely with the class teacher to ensure that effective support is delivered consistently, during work or play. 

This role is initially a fixed term contract until July 2026 and will incorporate a 6-month probation period. Depending on need there may be scope to extend the contract beyond July 2026.

PURPOSE OF THIS ROLE 

  • To work with the class teacher and SENDCO to support teaching and learning for a child with additional learning and behaviour needs.

The successful candidate will:

Deliver tailored learning activities and interventions as devised by the teacher, either in a small group setting or on a one-to-one basis

  • Support and encourage regular engagement in whole class learning, making necessary adaptations as directed by the teacher to ensure activities are accessible
  • Manage challenging behaviour calmly and consistently
  • Facilitate regular sensory and movement breaks, often involving physical exercise outdoors
  • Liaise with external professionals involved in supporting the child’s needs
  • Support the social and emotional development of the child, raising any concerns as per the school’s policy and protocols
  • Show initiative and flexibility
  • Build effective relationships with children, parents and colleagues
  • Attend to pupils’ personal needs including helping with social, welfare and health matters, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate
  • Ensure that the school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection procedures are closely followed

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement planned learning activities/teaching programs as agreed with the teacher, adjusting activities according to pupils’ responses as appropriate
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of learning activities with the teacher, providing feedback to the teacher on pupil progress and behaviour
  • Support the teacher in monitoring, assessing and recording pupil progress/activities
  • Support learning by arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the teacher
  • Support pupils in social and emotional well-being, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate
  • Share information about pupils with other staff, parents / carers, internal and external agencies, as appropriate
  • Understand and support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils as required.
  • Attend to pupils’ personal needs including helping with social, welfare and health matters, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate. 

KEY RELATIONSHIPS 

  • The post is line managed by the SENCO.
  • The role involves regular liaison with other teaching and support staff in school, parents and families.
  • The post holder will develop effective working relationships with key external agencies
  • To liaise regularly with the Reception Class Teacher and the SENCO to develop programs of intervention to use with SEMH students
  • To deliver 1-1 or small group intervention to SEMH students as required.
