Children’s residential services

The staff teams in our children’s homes provide a caring, safe and stimulating environment for the young people who live there. Every member of the team has a part to play in building positive relationships, making every day the best it can be and supporting each child in their learning and personal development.

You’ll find that no two shifts are the same. You might be reviewing a young person’s care plan with other professionals one moment, and in the next watching a movie with a child or supporting them to spend time with their family. It is immensely rewarding work as you see every day the difference you make to a child’s development and progress.

We know there can be challenges though and you will be part of a supportive team that has your wellbeing at heart. We care about your professional development too, offering training opportunities and funding to study for relevant qualifications. There is a clear career path through the team structure for the right candidates, with potential for progression into management roles.

Our children’s residential service is citywide; we believe we can best support children’s wellbeing and future outcomes by enabling them to stay close to their families and communities.

The service includes a range of settings:

  • homes providing long-term care for up to 4 children from age 11 to 18
  • small group living settings that can accommodate 2 children
  • homes for short-term placements that engage young people in an intensive programme to support their return to the family home
  • specialist homes providing long-term or respite care for children with complex needs
  • Adel Beck Secure Children’s Home, for young people referred through the criminal justice system or for their own or others’ safety

Each home is run by its own team of staff on a rota basis although there is flexibility to move between settings to respond to service demands. Our Residential Practitioners and Senior Practitioners are responsible for the day-to-day care and support of children and young people in the homes. Each home is led by a Registered Manager or Team Manager supported by a Deputy Manager.

In some settings the team will also include teaching staff and learning support colleagues, business support roles and a facilities, catering and domestic team.

Our colleagues say:

Emma, Residential Practitioner

“The team is absolutely child centred, with an emphasis on a young person’s choices being listened to and acted on. The training is great, the staff are so diverse and everyone brings something a little different to the table.”

Andrew, Registered Manager

“I come to work thinking ‘what can I achieve today?’ I’m focused on creating the best outcomes for the young people we look after, and I know that as a manager I need to give all the support I can to enable the care team to do their job well.”
