Job Description
Job Purpose:
The Fitness and Wellbeing Manager drives this integral part of the Active Leeds service, leading on product / programme development, pricing, promotions and staff development. The postholder also influences and advises on digital development, branding and customer communication
The customer journey is essential to our success, with the Fitness and Wellbeing Manager leading on the four key steps of the journey: enquiry, sales, engagement and exit. The journey needs to be evolved and embedded within the service.
Customer engagement is a key area to lead on, covering everything from: a customer making an initial enquiry; to purchasing a membership; to encouraging a member to stay with us for an extended period of time; to re-engaging with ex-members.
Setting sales targets and reporting back on performance is a critical part of the role, as is uncovering customer insights to support service delivery and development
This is a senior post within the service and as such will be expected to lead, inspire and motivate teams and individuals.
The job holder will maintain a polite and professional manner at all time and will work to Leeds City Council / Active Leeds values and standards.
Responsibilities for Grade:
- Leading on the strategic development of fitness and wellbeing within the operational side of the service, by utilising personal skills, experience and knowledge of the market, whilst ensuring customers and staff are consulted.
- Ensure ongoing development, evolvement and management of the fitness and wellbeing offer, focusing on all elements of the marketing mix
- Evolve and embed the customer journey paying particular attention to the enquiry, sales, engagement and exit phases
- Supporting the Senior Leadership team in managing fitness and wellbeing and working collaboratively with other colleagues responsible for delivering other aspects of health and wellbeing.
- Explore new opportunities to develop the Active Leeds offer, looking at new products and new audiences
- To identify and manage opportunities to develop fitness and wellbeing areas within leisure centres.
- Manage allocated budget/resources/funding effectively and flexibly and control all related expenditure to ensure delivery of targets/objectives within budget.
- Work collaboratively with other team members across key business development areas such as: business intelligence, reporting, digital development, marketing and branding
- Lead and manage a team of Fitness and Wellbeing Officers and the Sales and Retention Officer, ensuring they are supported and developed to deliver against key objectives.
- To lead on and support the development of effective marketing, promotion, and communications solutions.
- To lead on and support the development of new digital platforms.
- Work with external and internal partners to develop and enhance the fitness and wellbeing offer
- Develop strong, positive relationships with both Operational and Development teams, sharing knowledge and experience with others for their benefit.
- To contribute to the continuous improvement of the service.
- To represent the service internally or externally at focus groups, sports forums and provide specialist advice and support across the dispilines.
- To effectively manage appropriate budgets in accordance with Leeds City Council’s Financial Regulations.
- To undertake any other duties which may be assigned from time to time and that are commensurate with the grade of the post.
- To undertake the accountabilities of the post in accordance with council policies including the Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety policies.
Qualifications:
Degree or equivalent in sport, leisure or business.
Level 3 diploma in Personal Training

Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of current research, trends, policies, plans and developments within the health/sport/leisure industry and the ability to evidence action after insight
- In depth knowledge and understanding of the fitness and wellbeing programmes for all target groups
- Understanding and evidence of working with partners, stakeholders, customers and staff.
- Knowledge of fitness development pathways.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of the customer journey
- A good understanding of the importance of the marketing mix
- An understanding of health and wellbeing membership sales
Experience Required
- Experience of leading and managing staff effectively through appraisals, and objective setting. Creating an environment where staff are motivated to perform and supported to achieve departmental and organisational goals
- Experience of utilising commercial acumen to identify funding avenues, preparing, submitting successful funding bids, and maximising available revenue spend to ensure value for money
- Strong track record of building collaborative partnerships across organisational boundaries
- Experience of delivering a groupe exercise fitness programmes
- Experience of working in a sales driven environment
- Experience of develvering pastoral support to staff and customers.
- Experience of delivering effective training in various disciplines
- Experience of working with partners and external support agencies
- Experience of maintaining effective records to required standards.
