Purpose of the Role
To ensure the school site, buildings, and grounds are maintained to a safe, clean, and high standard. The Site Superintendent plays a key role in the smooth running of the school by overseeing maintenance, security, health & safety compliance, and general premises management.
Key Responsibilities
Site Maintenance & Repairs
- Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and DIY tasks throughout the school.
- Identify and report larger repairs requiring specialist contractors.
- Oversee contractor visits, ensuring work is completed safely and to specification.
- Maintain a programme of planned preventative maintenance (PPM).
- Ensure heating, lighting, ventilation, and water systems operate effectively.
Security
- Act as the main keyholder for the school.
- Open and secure the school buildings, including alarm systems.
- Monitor CCTV and security systems where applicable.
- Respond to out-of-hours emergencies or call-outs (if required).
Health & Safety Compliance
- Conduct regular H&S checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and water flushing.
- Maintain accurate logs for statutory compliance (e.g., fire safety, asbestos, legionella).
- Ensure COSHH regulations are followed for cleaning and maintenance materials.
- Support with risk assessments for premises-related activities.
Cleaning & Hygiene
- Monitor and support the cleaning team, ensuring high standards across all areas.
- Order and manage cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Respond to urgent cleaning or hygiene issues as they arise.
School Grounds & Outdoor Areas
- Maintain playgrounds, paths, gardens, and car parks.
- Ensure outdoor areas are safe and tidy (e.g., clearing leaves, snow/ice gritting).
- Undertake basic groundskeeping tasks.
Facilities Management
- Manage stock levels for premises and cleaning equipment.
- Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and utility providers.
- Support with room setup for school events, meetings, and assemblies.
- Assist with moving furniture and equipment.
Support to the School Community
- Provide a friendly, helpful presence to staff, pupils, and visitors.
- Ensure the site is welcoming, safe, and conducive to learning.
- Help maintain a positive image of the school.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience in premises maintenance, caretaking, or a similar role.
- Good practical skills (basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, minor repairs).
- Strong knowledge of health & safety and compliance.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Reliability, integrity, and a proactive approach.
Desirable
- Experience in a school environment.
- Relevant training: first aid, fire marshal, health & safety, COSHH.
- Knowledge of safeguarding principles.
